Biotechnology is a tool that allows you to apply and leverage the extensive knowledge of various sciences such as genetics, biology, medicine, chemistry, physiology and engineering among others. Biotechnology and all branches arising from it are considered "Disciplines of the century".

Its main objective is to use the knowledge acquired over time, resulting from the efforts of thousands of scientists around the world, specializing in a particular science, building on the understanding of certain physiological mechanisms responsible for some beneficial effect (such as route synthesis of a vitamin) or any harmful effects (eg development of cancer), "control" of certain biological features are achieved by leveraging advances in genetics, through the use or handling of certain genes responsible for this effect.

Since the early 70's, scientists have studied specific genes in plants as well as the use of this genetic material to develop certain plants with certain characteristics in particular, as having built an insecticidal protein, harmless to humans and animals but effective to eliminate pests. Another example is the insertion of an enzyme with reduced metabolic activity to the original, for example to delay ripening of tomatoes.

The use of these technologies allows for increased crop yield by preventing damage caused by pests and reducing or even eliminating the use of chemical fertilizers, both result in increased production in the same planting area. Since these modified plants are available, and more than a decade ago, its adoption has been amazing compared to any new agricultural technology, precisely because the benefits they can offer.
