Horticulture: Bangladesh Concept

Economic growth, rising incomes, and urbanization have led to a growing domestic demand for fresh fruits, vegetables, and spices that vastly exceeds current supplies, making Bangladesh a net importer of horticultural products. Some 10 million farmers participate in the value chain, and significant growth opportunities exist for processed fruits and vegetables in the domestic market. The growing gap between demand and supply for Bangladeshi horticultural products presents enormous opportunities to expand production, generate income, and create jobs throughout the value chain. PRICE works to improve the domestic supply and export potential in particular of three key horticultural crops: potato, eggplant and mango. The project implements targeted interventions to remove production constraints, increase sales, and spur industry-wide growth. Thus far, PRICE interventions have reached over 7,000 farmers and generated about 3,079 new jobs and $ 8.8 million in additional sales. Safe vegetable and fruit production has been promoted by encouraging the use of biological controls and the avoidance of harmful chemicals, and farmers have been linked directly to markets.
