Aquaculture held in Chile has a great impact since he realizes 33% of total production worldwide, but only produces 2.2% of the global science and technology (S & T) in this area. Over 80% of Chilean aquaculture develops in the Lakes Region and in 2007 88% of the 682 units approved for algae, 84% of the 1359 centers approved for shellfish and 43% of the 1494 centers were authorized to fish in this region. This has made Puerto Montt in the epicenter of this productive activity nationwide. The purpose of the program is to train scientists at the highest level, to develop critical thinking and ethical as well as the ability to identify and resolve technical and productive field of aquaculture. The set of academic activities of the program allows students to acquire skills for Aquaculture systems approach and gives the essential tools to create new knowledge. Graduates of our program will make competitive scientific research, either individually or as part of a multidisciplinary group. The Doctor of Science in Aquaculture is a collegiate program, involving scholars from Puerto Montt headquarters, Faculty of Sciences and Faculty of Veterinary Science, Universidad Austral de Chile, which bind guest lecturers from foreign universities and national academic and private sector partners.
